Labour Department affirms working on bettering conditions for women in agriculture

Published on

The Labour Department has affirmed its intention to ensure better working conditions for women in the agricultural sector, following its meeting with NGO, Women on Farms Project.

Minister of Employment and Labour, Thulas Nxesi took to Twitter on Thursday, 6 May 2021, to share the resolutions he developed with the Women on Farms Project. The Women on Farms Project is a non-government organisation (NGO) based in Western Cape which seeks to ensure the safety of women working on farms and within the agricultural sector.

Amongst the grievances that were noted by Nxesi was the lack of assistance for workers when they visit labour centres, which he has committed to improving. Nxesi also highlighted the importance of having mobile inspectors travelling to communities, in order to avoid unnecessary transport costs for workers.

Moreover, the minister emphasised the importance of adopting the International Labour Organisation (ILO) Convention 190. The convention is focused on redefining sexual harassment clauses which govern the workplace in the agricultural sector.
