KWD grants €14 million to Liberia to pave roadways

The German Development Bank (KWD) has provided a grant of €14 million to Liberia on behalf of the German government for the pavement of the Ganta to Zwedru Toad

In remarks Wednesday, 12 December 2018, during the signing ceremony at a local hotel in Monrovia, Finance and Development Planning Minister Samuel D. Tweah said the money was made available under the Liberia Reconstruction Trust Fund (LRTF).

According to Tweah, the LRTF is a multi-partner mechanism intended to fund road and power infrastructure in Liberia.

Tweah lauded the German government for its continuous support to the government and people of Liberia, noting that the latest support will enable Liberia to move to the next level of development.

He reaffirmed the government’s commitment and support for the restoration of the country’s infrastructure facilities with emphasis on the road and electricity sectors.

“We want to solve the road problems in the next five years; we do not want to build political roads; rather, we want to build roads that will help revive our economy on a prolonged basis,” Tweah emphasized.

He assured international partners of the government’s preparedness to ensure that all necessary mechanisms are put in place to ensure transparency and accountability in the use of resources.

Tweah also disclosed that the government of the United Kingdom has confirmed its support to the provision of an additional US$6.5 million for the same road project in an effort to buttress the Germans.

In remarks at the signing ceremony, the Deputy Head of the German Government Mission in Liberia, Gunter Plambeck, said the gesture is in recognition of the relationship that has subsisted between the two countries for over 160 years.

The German envoy reaffirmed his government’s commitment to supporting the Government of Liberia’s Pro-Poor Agenda which seeks to lift the ordinary people from poverty to prosperity.
