Kenya’s Monica Juma in Jordan for three-day official visit

Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for foreign affairs, Monica Juma, is in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan for a three-day official visit.

Juma is representing President Uhuru Kenyatta in the “Aqaba process follow-up meeting on East Africa” at the invitation of King Abdullah II, Ibn AL Hussein.

The two-day meeting, which kicked off on Saturday, brings regional stakeholders and international partners together to reflect on progress since the first meeting, and address regional and global peace and security issues.

On arrival in Amman on Friday, 7 December 2018, evening, Juma held a bilateral meeting with her Jordanian counterpart, Ayman Saladi, and they discussed strengthening bilateral relations. They reaffirmed commitment to continue working together for the mutual benefit of both countries.

“The two foreign ministers agreed that the visit provides an opportunity for constructive conversation to enhance levels of cooperation based on the solid track record of cooperation, particularly in the area of regional and global peace and security,” a foreign affairs statement issued in Nairobi on Saturday announced.

They agreed to urgently put together a multi-sectoral team of experts from both countries to expeditiously finalise the proposed Special Status Agreement (SSA), noting that the SSA will elevate the Kenya-Jordan relationship to a strategic level and provide the foundation for follow-up technical levels discussions in other areas as education, tourism, trade, labour, security, health and agriculture.

The meeting was a follow-up on discussions between the two ministers on the sidelines of the 73rd Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York in September 2018.
