Absa Premiership result: Free State Stars 0 – 2 Kaizer Chiefs.
Venezuelan striker Gustavo Paez scored his first goal of the season, and attacking midfielder Philani Zulu scored his second club goal for Chiefs to hand Amakhosi three points away on the road.
Chiefs climbed to third in the table and above arch rivals Orlando Pirates, which occupies the fourth spot.
Central midfielder George Maluleka remarkably won the Man of the Match on his first game in three months for the club.
“It’s been quite a while, about three months or so. I’ve been working my way back. The guys have been motivating me, making sure that always I’m in good hands. I’m very proud of the boys and I’m grateful with the amount of effort they put in tonight,” Maluleka said after the game.
Solinas made seven changes, including debuts for defenders Mario Booysen and Ugandan international Godfrey Walusimbi in a reshuffled backline that also included Kgotso Moleko at right-back.
“In this game we needed to refresh the team. Give everyone a chance. Everyone performed well. Great performance, we need to continue working hard and improve,” explained Solinas.
“Tomorrow we’ll have regeneration training and only the players who did not play [against Free State Stars] will train. We need rest to recover and after that we play AmaZulu. It’s a very important game for us we’re playing at home we need the three points,” he said.
Meanwhile, Stars marked a fifth game without a win, leaving coach Luc Eymael at a loss for a solution.
“I don’t know what will happen. I’m trying my best, unfortunately things are not going our way and I’m not clear on what is the solution.”
Chiefs will take on AmaZulu this weekend, while Stars host Highlands Park.
