It is time to start thinking about your UJ application for 2025

Deciding when and where you will study will most likely be one of the most important decisions that you make in your life.

And though there are no guarantees when it comes to university admissions, making sure that you get your affairs in order early is already a step in the right direction.

The 2025 academic year may still seem far away to most people, but the reality is that universities in South Africa have been moving their application dates up in order to accommodate the additional administrative load of the ever-increasing number of applications received each year.

And universities across the country have already opened their applications for the upcoming year. This includes the University of Johannesburg (UJ), which was ranked among the 500 best universities in the world according to the Times Higher Education World University Rankings, whose applications officially opened on 1 April 2024.

How many students apply to UJ each year?

UJ consistently ranks as one of the best universities in South Africa and therefore, the university receives thousands of new applications annually.

UJ received almost 283,000 during the intake process for the 2024 academic year, but the university limited its intake of undergraduate first-year students for 2024 to just 10,500.

And, according to the World University Rankings data, the university has just over 31,700 full-time students enrolled for the 2024 academic year (with around 13% of the student population comprising international students).

How to apply

If you would like to throw your hat in the ring to become one of the thousands of students studying at UJ in 2025, you will need to fill out the appropriate application forms.

You can do this by filling out your application online, or by submitting your completed application form to one of UJ’s four campuses, before the closing date.

Applying to UJ via the online platform will not incur any additional charges, but you will have to pay an application fee of R200 for paper-based, in-person applications.

The closing date for UJ applications

Although it is advisable to get your application submitted as soon as possible, you still have time until the closing date later this year to finalise and submit your application.

The closing dates for the 2025 academic year applications at UJ, including all undergraduate programs and student accommodation applications, is 31 October 2024 at 12:00.
