Is it safe to drink tap water in South Africa?

The safety levels of drinking water in South Africa have dropped significantly in the last decade, and levels vary from one location to the next.

In the last 10 years, the quality of drinking water in South Africa has decreased significantly. This is why it is advisable for all South Africans and tourists alike to research the safety levels of drinking water in most locations in the country.

South Africa was for many years known for high-quality drinking water, especially in Africa, a continent with questionable drinking water. However, in the last few years, the safety level of drinking water in South Africa has dropped by a noticeable 8%. This is due to dysfunctional sewerage plants, poor sewerage management techniques and poorly maintained sewerage infrasture, a situation that has led to increased levels of water pollution.

At present, tap water quality in South Africa is inconsistent and depends on the location. This is why it is adivsable to do your research and ask the locals whether it is safe to drink the tap water in their region.
