IFP calls for Motsoaledi to account for “SA’s broken immigration system”

Published on

The IFP is calling for Minister of Home Affairs, Aaron Motsoaledi to account for the country’s poor immigration system, following the Bushiris’ reported escape to Malawi.

The Inkatha Freedom Party’s (IFP) Spokesperson, Liezl van der Merwe took to Twitter on Monday, 16 November 2020, to circulate a statement calling for the Minister of Home Affairs, Aaron Motsoaledi to appear before the Portfolio Committee. This follows the reported escape of controversial prophet, Shepherd Bushiri, and his wife, Mary, to Malawi, despite their bail conditions.

The IFP has since highlighted the supposed poor and broken state of the country’s immigration system, which is said to be partially to blame for their escape. Moreover, the Bushiris’ citizenship documents were also fraudulent, according to reports, a matter which initially sparked criticism of the department.

The IFP stated, “It is of vital importance that the minister brief the Portfolio Committee on Home Affairs and the nation on the department’s plan to remedy South Africa’s broken immigration system.”
