The IEC has confirmed the closure of the candidate nomination process for the upcoming local government elections, reporting a total of 59 272 contenders.
The Independent Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) issued a statement announcing the official closure of candidate nominations for the upcoming local government elections (LGE) on Tuesday, 24 August 2021. The IEC conveyed its thanks to political parties and independent candidates for their continued interest in electoral democracy.
The commission confirmed that in line with the electoral timetable, the first stage of the candidate nomination process has concluded and that work is already in progress to gather all the nomination information. The IEC also noted that the preliminary figures have stipulated that the total number of candidates is 59 272, which includes those captured through the online candidate nomination system as well as manually. Local IEC offices are said to still be capturing manual submissions received before the cut-off time.
The commission further noted that 10 478 municipal council seats are being contested in this year’s elections, with the total number of independent candidates being 944. The total amount of election deposits made is over R7 million. The final lists of candidates is expected to be certified and published on Tuesday, 7 September 2021, and certified candidates will be issued with certificates on Monday, 13 September 2021.
