IEC publishes Electoral Code of Conduct information rules

The IEC has published details on the Electoral Code of Conduct, aimed at promoting free and fair elections, further warning that a breach will deem you guilty of crime.

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) issued relevant information on its Electoral Code of Conduct on Friday, 1 October 2021, warning that anyone who is found to be breaching the code will be guilty of a crime. The IEC explained that the Code of Conduct is aimed at promoting the conditions conducive to free and fair elections and is a way of creating a climate of tolerance, free political campaigning and open public debate.

It also stated that as soon as the election date is proclaimed, parties, agents and candidates commit themselves to adhering to the provisions of the code. A failure to adhere to the Code of Conduct will create risk for a party’s candidates or independent candidates being disqualified. If anyone suspects a party or candidate has breached the code, it will need to be reported to the Electoral Court.
