How to play the French Lotto – rules and all you need to know

Published on

South Africans who are 18 years and older can placed fixed odds bets on the French Lotto; here’s a quick, easy and accurate look at how to do this.

The French Lotto offers attractive odds of winning, as there is effectively a one in 16 chance of winning any prize. It is a popular draw because of its frequency as well, given that it happens three times per week.

All you have to do is select five numbers from the main pool, which comprises digits 1 to 49. Then, pick a number from the pool of 1 to 10. You could do this manually or, to make things a bit quicker and easier if you want to, use the Quick+1 option. You will never miss a draw if you select the subscription feature.

To win the main prize in the French Lotto, you have to correctly match all five numbers and the bonus number. You will know on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays at about 08:20 pm – when the draws take place – whether you have won or not. The first tier prize grows 50 percent quicker than lotteries that offer just two draws per week.

You do not have to match all five numbers and the bonus ball to win something. There are eight other divisions in which you can win, depending on how many numbers you get right. Have a look at this handy table, which lets you know the odds of winning and the estimated prize for each. The payout you get will be the estimated rand value equivalent of the euro, based on the exchange rate at the time.

Prize tier Odds of winning Estimated payout
5 numbers and bonus number 1 in 19,068,840 At least €2 million
5 numbers 1 in 2,118,760 €100,000
4 numbers and bonus number 1 in 88,677 €1,000
4 numbers 1 in 9,631 €500
3 numbers and bonus number 1 in 2,016 €50
3 numbers 1 in 224 €20
2 numbers and bonus number 1 in 144 €10
2 numbers 1 in 16 €5
0 numbers and bonus number 1 in 18 €2.20

If you guessed any numbers correctly and your account has been verified, proceed to your account and withdraw your winnings. If your account has not been verified, you will first have to provide proof of your identification and proof of address. When this is confirmed, you will then be able to withdraw your winnings.

There is a DoublePayout option as well, which allows you to play for twice the official tier 1 prize money for double the price of your bet. If you double your stake, you will stand a chance of winning double the amount of the regular payout value.

Payouts are guaranteed for South Africans. Winnings are paid out according to the payout tables of each individual operator. The goal, effectively, is to place the player in the same economic position as they would have been if they had played in the actual draw and won any of the prizes.
