SASSA has adopted the use of a cellphone to check the balance on the grant card, as beneficiaries can now dial a unique USSD code to gain access to information relating to the account.
The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has attempted to make it easy for beneficiaries to check the balance of their grant cards anywhere, anytime. The agency has done so by adopting the use of a cellphone, similar to how major banks allow accountholders to access their accounts using cellphone banking.
To access the account, the SASSA grant cardholder needs to use the unique USSD code, which has been noted as *120*3210#. The code direct the cardholder to the SASSA cellphone banking portal. Once on the landing page, the cardholder needs to follow the prompts in order to view the balance. Cardholders will be required to enter their identification number for verification.
Alternatively, one could visit their nearest Post Office branch to check their balance. However, this is not advisable, as the use of the card will result in charges, which will reduce the amount available to the cardholder.
