Hill-Lewis calls for Cele’s resignation

Published on

The DA’s Hill-Lewis has called for the resignation of Police Minister, Bheki Cele, following his alleged rant over the party’s disapproval of his plan to seize CPT policing.

On Monday, 11 October 2021, the Democratic Alliance’s (DA) City of Cape Town mayoral candidate, Geordin Hill-Lewis issued a statement calling on Police Minister, Bheki Cele to resign. This is after what the party has described as a deranged rant on Friday, 8 October 2021, in direct response to the party’s protest march against Cele’s plans to take over Cape Town’s law enforcement powers.

Hill-Lewis noted how Cele’s plan for a single police service would limit the powers of Cape Town’s peace officers, move the law enforcement command-and-control structure away from the city and into the South African Police Service, and take away the city’s power to set its own local policing priorities. He also stressed that Capetonians are tired of being failed by the national government and a national police force that could not and did not want to keep them safe, calling for Cele to resign.
