Health Department asserts plans to introduce NHI
The Health Department has asserted its plans to have the NHI recognised and implemented, especially in light of the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Department of Health took to Twitter on Sunday, 13 December 2020, to rehash the conversation on the National Health Insurance (NHI) and its establishment. The tweet shared was a video that showcased how Health Minister, Dr Zweli Mkhize spent International Universal Health Coverage Day on Saturday, 12 December 2020.
During his hospital visit, the minister confirmed that the country has entered into the second wave of the global pandemic, as the country is believed to have surpassed the 6 000 daily infection rate in this past weekend’s statements. More than just surpassing it, on Sunday, 13 December 2020, some 7 999 new cases were reported.
The pandemic and the demand on the public health sector has emphasised the need for the state to advance the implementation of the NHI. The implementation thereof, if handled right, would bridge the gap between the public and private healthcare sectors.
