Gungubele says 550 000 jobs were supported by Presidential Employment Stimulus in phase one

Minister Mondli Gungubele has updated on the progress made by the Presidential Employment Stimulus, with phase one seeing 550 000 jobs and livelihoods being supported.

The Presidency issued a statement by Minister Mondli Gungubele on Thursday, 14 October 2021, during the announcement of phase two of the Presidential Employment Stimulus, launched by President Cyril Ramaphosa in October 2020. The launch of the stimulus was in response to the impact of the pandemic on employment.

Gungubele touched on how the main objective of the stimulus is to use public investment to create jobs and at scale, to provide support to those who need it. In addition to creating jobs and supporting incomes, he added that the stimulus also aims to support local economic recovery by providing a larger stimulus for consumer spending in poorer communities.

The minster confirmed that phase one of the stimulus saw more than 550 000 jobs and livelihoods being supported with an overall target of 694 120 opportunities. More programmes are being implemented so the number is expected to increase
