The government enlisted Ministers Fikile Mbalula and Thulas Nxesi to receive the workers’ memorandum during COSATU’s national strike action, which seeks to address various grievances.
The government deployed Minister of Transport, Fikile Mbalula and Minister of Employment and Labour, Thulas Nxesi on Wednesday, 7 October 2020, to receive the memorandum of the workers’ demands. Currently, there is strike action across various parts of the country, as coordinated by the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU). The strike action seeks to address the alleged infringement and exploitation of workers’ rights.
While receiving the memorandum, Mbalula led the government delegation to address the crowd outside the National Treasury building in Pretoria. However, it seems his sentiments did little to quell the demands of the workers.
First, Mbalula acknowledged the government’s slow turnaround time in addressing the disgruntled workers. Secondly, he alluded to the possible return of e-tolls, which was not welcomed by the crowd.
