Government appeals to private landowners for donations

Published on

The government is calling on private landowners for donations towards achieving the land reform goals, further claiming that a framework to facilitate the process has been finalised.

Deputy President of the Republic, David Mabuza, on Thursday, 22 October 2020, answered questions posed to him by the National Assembly. One of the questions was the contentious matter of the Land Expropriation Bill that the government previously confirmed to be in the process of amending, in light of the ongoing public hearings on the expropriation of land without compensation.

According to Mabuza, the government has “adopted the National Policy on Beneficiary Selection and Land Allocation, which provides for a more systematic approach to correcting past injustices of access to land.”

Another one of the ways in which the government is trying to realise these goals is through acquiring unused land from private owners who are willing to donate it. Although Mabuza did not express how the appeal for donations was received by the public, he did clarify that a framework to facilitate the process has been finalised.
