Google dedicated its Doodle on 22 January to Soviet artist Sergei Eisenstein.
Eisenstein was born on 22 January 1898 and is best known and acclaimed for his directing role of many innovative films during his time, including Battleship Potemkin, Strike, and The General Line, as well as his other works such as Ivan the Terrible and Alexander Nevsky.
For some, Eisenstein is the “father of montage”, which is the “film technique of editing a fast-paced sequence of short shots to transcend time or suggest thematic juxtapositions.” Eisenstein was not only innovative artist, but was a social justice advocate, as many of his films often depicted the struggle of the oppressed underclasses against the ruling class.
The Doodle has enjoyed mass reach, drawing interest from Google users in all major cities in five continents, with Africa being the only exception. For many, the Doodle is a fitting tribute and commemoration to Sergei Eisenstein, one of the well-known innovators of the yesteryear, and on whose foundation today’s film industry is built.
