GOOD welcomes Matongo as new mayor, in hopes of better leadership

Published on

GOOD has welcomed the appointment of the new Mayor of Johannesburg, but has emphasised the need for him to demonstrate decisive leadership in combating poor service delivery.

Matthew Cook of the GOOD party has written a statement on the newly appointed Johannesburg Mayor, Jolidee Matongo, on Wednesday, 11 August 2021, stating that he has entered office with the full weight of his predecessors’ underwhelming performance on his shoulders. Cook noted that Matongo has a gilt-edged opportunity to demonstrate decisive leadership with government elections around the corner.

Cook expressed that the party welcomes the filling of the city’s highest office, and that Matongo’s previous role as Johannesburg’s MMC for Finance would have equipped him well to ensure that the city spends its budget wisely and without corruption. GOOD also welcomed Matongo’s promise of “serious consequences” for those who failed to spend Johannesburg’s R73 billion budget properly, as the party noted that service delivery in the city was so dire that it bordered on criminality for it not to be efficiently spending every cent at its disposal.

Cook stated that GOOD would continue to speak out and raise uncomfortable issues of poor management and poor service delivery, and that it is a good time for leaders of calibre to rise to the fore and guide Johannesburg’s economic recovery.
