Gauteng provincial government condemns violence in province

The Gauteng premier has condemned the acts of violence and lawlessness that took place in certain parts of the province, and commended SAPS for action taken.

The Premier of Gauteng, David Makhura has condemned the lawlessness in parts of Johannesburg. The Gauteng government issued a statement on behalf of the premier on Sunday, 11 July 2021. The statement served to inform the public that Makhura strongly condemns the acts of violence and lawlessness that took place in parts of the province on Saturday, 10 July 2021, and Sunday.

The government stated that the law enforcement agencies of Gauteng had reassured the premier that they were in control of the situation. The government further stated that law enforcement will continue to do everything they can to prevent any form of lawlessness and disruption of services in the province. The premier is said to have commended the Gauteng South African Police Service (SAPS) for responding swiftly, stating, “I would like to applaud the police for the swift arrests.”

Furthermore, the Gauteng government stated that the premier has called for calm in the province. Makhura concluded, “As a province and the country, we are still in the midst of a deadly pandemic and all of us are required to protect ourselves and avoid gatherings. I urge the people of Gauteng to observe lockdown regulations and only leave their homes when it is absolutely necessary.”
