On 25 January, the US Embassy in Pretoria announced that applications to the Fulbright programme for the 2019/20 academic year, are open. Applications will close April 22, 2018, and the Embassy says “applicants are encouraged to start the application process as soon as possible.”
The programme is open to South Africans wishing to pursue a Master’s degree, or a Doctorate at any accredited US university. The requirement for a Master’s degree is a completed three-year Bachelor’s degree with an Honors degree or four-year B-Tech degree. Those wishing to do study for a PhD must have successfully obtained a Master’s degree.
In a press release announcing the programme, U.S. Chargé d’Affaires Jessye Lapenn said, “The Fulbright Program attracts the brightest academic talent from around the world. I encourage South Africans who are dedicated to leadership, collaboration, and innovation in their fields to apply. This can be a life-changing experience that will have a profound influence on your professional and personal endeavors for years to come.”
The Fullbright programme is a prestigious international education exchange sponsored by the US government. According to the Embassy, the programme has to date, granted Fulbright scholarships to 2,000 South Africans to pursue degrees in the United States.
