The Forbes Africa Leading Women Summit, in partnership with the KwaZulu-Natal government, commenced on Friday morning, 8 March 2019.
World-renowned supermodel, activist and philanthropist Naomi Campbell was revealed as the keynote speaker to the Forbes Africa Leading Women Summit that commenced at the Durban International Conference Centre. This event is linked to the March issue of Forbes Africa.
While addressing the media at a press conference on Thursday, 7 March 2019, the Managing Editor for Forbes Africa and Forbes Women Africa, Methil Renuka, expressed the publication’s excitement for this event, claiming it as its biggest event to date.
Campbell, who is no stranger to South Africa as she had a close relationship with Nelson Mandela, vowed to change the world’s perceptions about Africa. “I look forward to shining a bright spotlight on Africa and its inspirational women. I pledge to change perceptions about Africa worldwide.
“The best people I know come from Africa. The best women I know come from this continent,” she said.
The summit is themed “New Wealth Creators” and is held in part of Forbes Africa’s mandate to uplift and empower the African woman. It is therefore fitting that it is held on International Women’s Day. Amongst the panellists is the Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation Minister in the Presidency, Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma. While speaking to CNBC Africa, Dlamini-Zuma urged Africans to be cognisant of gender-based violence in the country. “We must reflect on how some women fear for their lives and wonder if they’ll be alive tomorrow because they are being abused at home,” she said.
