Botswana President Mokgweetsi Masisi has fired a senior minister, who this week announced plans to challenge him for the ruling Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) presidency.
It was learned on Thursday, 20 December 2018, that the acting permanent secretary to the president, Elias Magosi, announced in a statement that Masisi had dropped Local Government Minister Pelonomi Venson-Moitoi “with immediate effect”.
The former minister confirmed her dismissal on Thursday.
“Yes, I hear I have been dropped from Cabinet. I am at peace with that. The race goes on nonetheless,” she wrote on Twitter.
Venson-Moitoi announced on Monday that she planned to challenge Masisi for the BDP presidency at the party’s elective congress scheduled for 2019.
