FF Plus reveals Emfuleni’s debt crisis to Eskom

Published on

According to FF Plus’ Senekal, the Emfuleni Municipality has allegedly not been honouring its repayment agreement with Eskom, owing the power utility R3.5 billion in total debt.

The Freedom Front Plus’ (FF Plus) Gerda Senekal issued a statement on Friday, 1 October 2021, stating that service delivery in the Emfuleni Local Municipality had been brought to a standstill on Thursday, 30 September 2021. This after Eskom seized one of the municipality’s current bank accounts.

Senekal noted that Eskom had opted to take this drastic action due to the municipality failing to pay the electricity supplier. She also stated that municipal vehicles and bulldozers are stranded due to a lack of fuel.

According to Senekal, Emfuleni has not honoured its repayment agreement with the power utility since the court ruled in Eskom’s favour, granting a summary judgement of R1.3 billion against the municipality. Furthermore, the amount forms part of Emfuleni’s historical debt amounting to R1.9 billion, which has allegedly been accrued since 2019, with total debt to Eskom at R3.5 billion.
