On Sunday, 25 February, the closing ceremony of Pyeongchang 2018 Olympic Games featured K-pop boy band EXO and former member of the iconic Korean girl group 2NE1, CL, putting on an amazing performance.
The South Korean-Chinese idol group EXO is one of the biggest boy bands in all of Asia, with five studio albums released which sold millions worldwide, and with an army of fans all over the world.
At the Olympic arena, EXO performed their hit ‘Power’, accompanied by a massive fireworks display.
Before the show, Suho, one of the band’s leading members said in an interview:
“It is quite overwhelming and unbelievable. We have seen other countries holding closing and opening ceremonies for the Olympic Games before, so the fact that we are performing at the closing ceremony itself is very honorable and it is really great. I’m feeling a variety of emotions and I might even cry after the show. It is an honor for the entire family and the entire group.”
Also performing at the ceremony was CL, who was the leader, rapper, and vocalist of the group 2NE1. She said she had to keep the details of the closing ceremony, as well as her involvement in it, a secret:
“I found out three months ago. It was very important to me. I had to prepare well, and there was the request to not tell anyone. It was a mission, and I kept the secret. Rather than explaining it with words, it is best to just show you.”
During and after the performance, they made headlines all over social media. Some fans even warned each other against using the official Olympic hashtag, fearing people will use that to get the results, dominating the channel encouraging people to use instead the #ClosingCeremony and #EXOlympics.
