The European Union (EU) has granted €550,000 to the Nouakchott Regional Council to help it improve the living condition of the inhabitants of the Mauritanian capital.
In a statement on Thursday, the council announced that the grant will make it possible to draw up a global development plan for Nouakchott.
A financing agreement was signed on Thursday, 13 December 2018, in Nouakchott by the president of the council, Fatimetou Mint Abdel Malek, and the ambassador and head of the European Union Delegation in Mauritania, Jiakomo Dirazo.
The EU said it had awarded three grants in 2018 of approximately €1,500,000 to local authorities throughout Mauritania.
They relate to capacity building for local authorities, particularly in waste management and the integration of young people into the world of work.
This will strengthen municipalities and enable them to become real actors in local development, the EU statement added.
