The Kingdom of eSwatini has rallied support from fellow Southern African Development Community (SADC) countries in its bid to host the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Secretariat.
In a letter addressed to SADC ambassadors accredited to the African Union (AU) headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, eSwatini called on the envoys to lobby other regions on its behalf as it bids for the right to host the offices of the enlarged African market.
“In view of the forthcoming, you are hereby requested to support and vigorously campaign for the Kingdom of eSwatini as the SADC candidate for hosting the AfCFTA Secretariat,” the letter read, referring to the Extra-Ordinary Session of the AU Assembly on the AfCFTA scheduled for 7 July 2019.
The AU meeting is, among other things, expected to decide on the country that would host the AfCFTA Secretariat.
Besides eSwatini, other countries vying for the right to host the secretariat are Egypt, Ethiopia, Ghana and Kenya.
