Electoral Commission launches 2021 municipal elections

The Electoral Commission has launched the 2021 municipal elections, anticipated to take place in July 2021, where over 65 candidates will be contesting.

The South African Government announced the launch of the 2021 municipal elections on Wednesday, 9 June 2021, by the Electoral Commission (EC). The purpose of the launch was to unveil the election creative campaign and to raise awareness among the South African electorate and all stakeholders about the upcoming elections.

EC Chairperson, Glen Mashinini was quoted as stating, “Local Government Elections are taking place in the most unprecedented and abnormal circumstances in our history but Covid-19 will not change our values, principles and beliefs. The commission is technically ready to conduct the upcoming elections.”

EC Chief Executive Officer, Sy Mamabolo noted that over 65 candidates are contesting in the elections this year. The voter registration weekend will take place on Saturday, 17 July 2021, and Sunday, 18 July 2021, for new voters to register and existing voters to update their registration information. Stations will open from 08:00 until 17:00 countrywide.
