Egyptian President wins the 2020 Babacar N’Diaye Trophy

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah has been named the winner of the 2020 Babacar N’Diaye Grand Builder-Trophy Super Prize, following an annual meeting of the Selection Committee for African Road Builders, held on June 26, 2020 in Nairobi, Kenya, the General Commission for the event announced on Monday, 13 July 2020.

At the end of the deliberations, Abdel Fattah al-Sissi, President of the Arab Republic of Egypt, was unanimously appointed by the members, African Super Prize for Road Builders – Babacar Ndiaye Trophy 2020.

The Egyptian President was selected for his personal leadership and for the completion of several completed works which contribute to the improvement of the quality of life of populations. The committee welcomed the heliopolis metro station project in Cairo 2.

The Selection Committee also welcomed the suspension bridge project on the Nile in Cairo, as well as the project to extend the port of Damiette and to rehabilitate the Tanta- Mansourah – Damiette railway line.

All these projects, completed or in the process of being finalised, have had a positive impact on millions of people, facilitating the mobility of goods and people and creating tangible business and employment opportunities.

The Babacar N’Diaye trophy should be presented on August 25, 2020 in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, during the Annual Meetings of the African Development Bank (AfDB), during the Final Conference with the President of the AfDB,  Akinwumi Adesina, as sponsor of the event.

The award aims to to improve the quality of roads and transport in Africa, as well as the quality of life of the people on the continent.

The annual appointment meeting of the Selection Committee of African Road Builders – Babacar Ndiaye Trophy was held on June 26, 2020 by videoconference. The meeting was attended by representatives of several media outlets from all sub-regions of Africa.

The Selection Committee worked on the basis of the report made by the Media for Infrastructure and Finance in Africa (MIFA) network, and took into account the recent public reports of international institutions and organisations on road and transport in Africa.

The central theme of the work was: “Roads and transport to improve the quality of life of people in Africa”. The selection committee encouraged all States to carry out concrete projects in good time to achieve these objectives.

The 2019 edition of the Babacar N’Diaye Trophy was won by Adama Barrow, President of the Republic of The Gambia. He accepted this distinction bearing the name of Dr Babacar Ndiaye, former president of the AfDB, who inspired this event.
