EFF’s Maotwe alleges procured vaccines are not effective against South African variant

Published on

Omphile Maotwe has alleged that the vaccines that have been procured by the government are not effective against the South African variant of COVID-19.

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) took to Twitter on Friday, 7 May 2021, to continue calling for the South African Government to adopt Russia’s Sputnik vaccine. The latest post shared was of the party’s Treasurer-General, Omphile Maotwe’s interview and inflammatory allegations about the vaccines procured by the state.

Maotwe claimed that there are currently no available studies that can confirm that the Johnson & Johnson vaccine or the Pfizer vaccine are effective against the South Africa variant. The variant has been confirmed as the most evident amongst new COVID-19 cases.

The Treasurer-General further alleged that the only reason that the country has opted for the two vaccines is Ramaphosa’s affiliation with the American and European political leaders. She also reiterated the importance of having choices, such as the EFF-endorsed Sputnik vaccine.
