The EFF is amongst those calling for a travel ban on India, following reports of a resurgence of COVID-19 in the country because of a circulating variant.
The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) took to Twitter on Wednesday, 5 May 2021, to share a statement calling for a travel ban on India. The statement comes on the back of the state confirming that three travellers from India tested positive for the virus upon their arrival in the country. This led to much concern because the country is currently experiencing a resurgence because of the B.1.617 variant that appears to be spreading.
The EFF noted, “This is a blatant failure by this government to follow global trends of the virus and act accordingly to protect lives, and is consistent with the generally reactive approach by those leading this country, where they want an exhibition of disaster and death before making necessary decisions.”
The state has yet to announce a travel ban on India, however, it has stipulated that there are currently no direct flights from India to South Africa. The government has also reiterated that it is on high alert at entry ports, as a way to monitor and detect cases upon arrival.
