EFF describes reopening of schools as “ponzi scheme”

Published on

The Economic Freedom Fighters have issued a statement calling for the Department of Basic Education to close schools in the Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati Region, due to the spread of COVID-19.

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) took its call to have schools closed in the Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati Region, in the North West province, to Twitter on Monday, 29 June 2020. In its statement, the EFF expanded on its initial statement on the matter, issued on Monday, 22 June 2020, announcing that a Grade 12 learner had tested positive for coronavirus (COVID-19) at Vryburg High School.

In the latest statement, the EFF noted two additional schools in the region who have reported COVID-19 cases. The schools named were Bloemhof Primary School and Vryburg Primary School.

The statement also emphasised that the political party in the region has always been against the reopening of schools because of “scientific evidence which was there that the reopening of schools will spread coronavirus rapidly.” The EFF further described the reopening of schools as “nothing but a ponzi scheme masquerading as an attempt to save an academic year.”
