EFF demands immediate diplomatic intervention in Swaziland

Published on

The EFF is calling for immediate diplomatic intervention in the escalating situation in Swaziland, urging the AU and SADC to call on African statesmen who can resolve African democratic conflicts.

On Sunday, 4 July 2021, the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) issued a statement, demanding diplomatic intervention in eSwatini amidst protests for democracy. According to the EFF, the continent and the world have witnessed unrepentant violence, persecutions, kidnapping, and even murder of civilians, as a result of the genuine demands for democratic reforms and a principled stance against corruption of the monarchy.

The radical transformation party has called out both the African Union (AU) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC) for what it believes to be silence and inactivity. The EFF further claimed that human rights abuse is being perpetrated against activists with internet and network services suspended, in order to hide the massacre of people by state security, with the AU and SADC reportedly not engaging.

The EFF has, therefore, demanded intervention, which is primarily guided by the need to meet the demands for democracy and equal redistribution of wealth in the country. Moreover, as well as all efforts to bring calm to the nation that should be based on ensuring the status quo of abuse of power, corruption and controlling of state resources by one individual be done away with. The EFF also called on the AU and SADC to use experienced African statesmen who have proven capacity to resolve conflicts relating to democracy and establishing stable governance in African countries.
