The EFF is commemorating the Bisho Massacre, where protesters demanded Bantustan be included in SA and highlighted the call against the use of live ammunition against civilians in protest.
The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) are commemorating 29 years since the Bisho Massacre, in a statement issued on Tuesday, 7 September 2021. The EFF noted that the incident resulted in the murders of 29 people by the Ciskei Government, in an effort to curb political rebellion against the Bantustan.
The EFF outlined that the event had characterised the bloodshed of African people on the eve of the 1994 democratic transition, whereby Ciskei soldiers proceeded to fire automatic weapons against protesters. The protestors were demanding that the Bantustan be incorporated in South Africa, questioning the puppet regime of the apartheid system.
The party further believes that the events served as a stark reminder of the need for intolerance of the use of live ammunition against civilian protesters, making reference to the similar events of the Marikana Massacre. It also conveyed that the blood of the Bisho slain remains etched in society’s collective memory.
