The EFF has called on the IEC to provide free access to its online voter registration website and application, to encourage more participation from the youth.
The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) issued a statement on Monday, 13 September 2021, calling on the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) to provide zero-rated mobile data access on the IEC online voter registration website and application, with immediate effect. The opposition party noted that the IEC had wrongfully blamed youth voter apathy on disinterest, which the EFF believes is not the case. It believes that the youth has been excluded from participation due to the requirement of data for access.
The EFF further urged that in order to ensure young people are reached and encouraged to vote, all IEC online facilities should be zero-rated and not require a fee to be paid by the youth, particularly in rural areas, townships and informal settlements. The EFF also noted that the failure to do this will cement the notion that the IEC is failing in its mandate.
