The EFF is calling for the reopening of political spaces in the country, to allow for regular political activity and meetings to resume ahead of the local elections.
The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) took to Twitter on Monday, 22 February 2021, to call for the reopening of political spaces. The EFF made its stance clear in a thread, which read, “Reopening will entail that all political parties are allowed to hold political gatherings, physically attend municipal councils, legislatures and Parliament.”
This comes as the EFF has been clear that should the local elections be confirmed to take place as initially planned, then political parties should be given the allowance to canvass for votes. However, if canvassing for votes is not possible, then voting in the midst of the pandemic should not be permitted either. According to the party, it would set an unfair advantage for some.
Currently, the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has not announced any changes to the planned local governance elections. However, the EFF did state that the reopening should be in compliance with COVID-19 regulations.
See the post below.
Our call for opening of political space should happen with strict
compliance to the necessary health protocols to avoid the spread of the coronavirus.
