Education Department to start vaccinations

Published on

The Department of Basic Education will be vaccinating teachers and additional staff as of this week, with plans of ensuring that 582 000 members get their long-awaited vaccination jabs.

On Monday, 21 June 2021, The Department of Basic Education issued a statement urging teachers and staff to prepare for vaccination as of this week. From Wednesday, 23 June 2021, the vaccination rollout for teachers and school staff is expected to begin, as was announced by the Minister of Basic Education, Angie Motshekga at the weekend.

The department is anticipating the vaccination of up to 582 000 educational staff by the end of two weeks. This is in efforts to rapidly normalise the schooling system again and recover the negative effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on education, especially that of lost academic time. The department will be receiving 300 000 doses of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.

Recognised teachers unions, as well as school governing body associations, are all on board with the rollout campaign for the education sector, and have dubbed the campaign “Drop All and Vaccinate!”. The department has sent out circulars to all provinces, which outlines the steps to be followed before and during the vaccination process. Provincial education departments have been tasked with providing more details in the district and circuit offices on the schedules of vaccinations at the designated sites.
