East London councillors double down on COVID-19 safety infringements

Minister Fikile Mbalula took to Twitter to showcase how the councillors in the Eastern Cape are supposedly doubling down on COVID-19 safety infringements, following the president’s address.

Minister of Transport, Fikile Mbalula took to Twitter on Friday, 4 December 2020, to showcase how councillors in East London are supposedly doubling down on infringements on COVID-19 safety regulations and protocols. The video follows President Cyril Ramaphosa naming the Eastern Cape’s Nelson Mandela Bay as a COVID-19 hotspot, further introducing stricter restrictions in the area.

Moreover, the implication was that the Eastern Cape as a whole could face similar consequences, as the province reportedly continues to have the highest number of infections. The video shared by Mbalula suggests that the Eastern Cape councillors have heeded the call to take the pandemic seriously, as it showcases a councillor patrolling the streets in a van with a megaphone. As advised by the president, those failing to adhere to the basic guidelines were identified and called out by the councillor.
