Campaigning for the 23 December 2018 elections in the Democratic Republic of Congo officially started Thursday, 22 November 2018, after midnight, going by the announcement made on Wednesday, 21 November 2018, by Corneille Nangaa, president of the Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI).
Next month’s will see the presidential elections, contested by 21 candidates, the legislative elections with 15,355 candidates, and the provincial legislative elections in which 19,640 candidates participate.
Nangaa met with the leaders of political parties and groups at the People’s Palace, and advised them familiarise themselves with the legal framework of the electoral process and electoral aggregates in their constituency.
Florence Marshal, spokeswoman for the UN mission in the DRC, said at a press conference also held on Wednesday, that MONUSCO expects a democratic debate and fair access to the media for all candidates, during the election campaign. She also welcomed the fact that the CENI’s electoral calendar is being respected.
