Omunye, the catchy “festive song” claimed by DJ Lag as his own
The Distruction Boyz and their mentor, DJ Tira, released a media statement earlier today in reaction to being accused yet again of plagiarising a track from artist DJ Lag.
DJ Lag initially accused the group in February 2018 of stealing his sound for their hit track Omunye.
The group denied the claims at the time and it was reported that all parties concerned had met and come up with an agreement regarding royalties and crediting of the track.
Afrotainment boss DJ Tira, claimed that the agreement to share royalties was not an admission of guilt by the group, but rather a ‘peace offering.’
The feud has continued however, due to misrepresentation of the agreement by media.
An article published by City Press on 25 March, accuses the group of having plagiarised from DJ Lag. The article also claims that the Distruction Boyz have admitted to stealing the song.
The media statement released by DJ Tira and the group, indicates that all offers of peace have thus been revoked. The statement denounces the act of plagiarism this and states “at no point have we accepted, admitted to or confessed to either have copied or stolen anything from DJ Lag.”
The group claims to only be seeking to elevate their brand and the genre of Gqom. They have admonished the attempts by media to tarnish their name.
The Distruction Boyz and DJ Tira had sought to resolve these issues without the involvement of lawyers.
With peace offerings off the table, only time will tell as to what the outcome of this debacle will be.
