The Department of Transport has introduced its focus for the coming weeks, as it is highlighting its efforts relating to road safety and maintenance.
The Department of Transport, led by Minister Fikile Mbalula, took to Twitter on Sunday, 8 November 2020, to reveal that he will be paying a visit to the South African National Roads Agency’s (SANRAL) upgrade project on the N6 in Smithfield in the Free State. In outlining the importance of the project, Mbalula stated, “This project has generated 390 jobs to the value of R 28 073 197, [giving] economic opportunities to 30 sub-contractors.”
This week, the department appears to be focusing on the development of roads and road safety, as the country slowly prepares for the festive season. Mbalula’s previous post, before announcing his Free State visit, was on the Arrive Alive awareness campaign.
The refocus on roads and the safety thereof comes as the matter of the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA), and the state of train stations, has many unresolved issues. The most recent update on the matter suggested that the new fleet of trains is still to be implemented nationally.
