Department of Transport notes aims of National Taxi Lekgotla

The Department of Transport has noted its aims for the two-day National Taxi Lekgotla, which seeks to devise an “industry empowerment model” to benefit taxi operators.

The Department of Transport, led by Minister Fikile Mbalula, took to Twitter on Wednesday, 28 October 2020, to state the aims of the National Taxi Lekgotla. The lekgotla kicked off on Thursday, 29 October 2020, with President Cyril Ramaphosa opening the proceedings. The president provided his opening address virtually, despite the lekgotla being held in Boksburg.

The government has previously stated the purpose of the lekgotla, which is to formalise the taxi industry and create regulations that the will govern it. However, the latest post championed the “industry empowerment model,” which is expected to benefit the taxi drivers and commuters.

The department stated, “We have committed to re-imagining the Taxi Recapitalisation Programme, such as that the real beneficiaries of this massive public investment are taxi operators, rather than commercial banks, retailers and other cooperates.”
