The Department of Transport has affirmed its plans to regulate the taxi industry, following the recent lekgotla which saw the SANTACO representatives in attendance.
The Department of Transport took to Twitter on Sunday, 18 October 2020, to report back on the outcomes of the latest taxi lekgotla, which was hosted earlier that day. The lekgotla saw Minister of Transport, Fikile Mbalula, former Public Protector, Professor Thuli Madonsela, Executive Manager of the Road Traffic Training Academy, Dr Hlengani Moyane, and the Centre of Scientific and Industrial Research’s Dr Mathetha Mokonyama in attendance.
One of the outcomes from the lekgotla was the confirmation of the government’s intention to formalise and regulate the taxi industry. This was a matter that was brought to light at the height of the lockdown, when the taxi industry would not toe the line over the permitted capacity for each trip. The friction showcased how much autonomy the taxi industry has because of its existence as a standalone body. Since then, Mbalula has made it one of his primary focuses to have the industry regulated, in order for the state to have input.
