Minister Thulas Nxesi has reflected on his department’s efforts to mitigate COVID-19 and the role that the UIF and CF benefits played in achieving economic security amid job losses during lockdown.

Minister of Employment and Labour, Thulas Nxesi reflected on his department’s efforts to alleviate the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Nxesi also highlighted some of the challenges the department has encountered since the global pandemic hit the country in 2020. The Department of Labour played an integral role in keeping the country’s economy afloat.

In the Labour Department’s COVID-19 webinar on Friday, 11 June 2021, Nxesi addressed how the department had to leverage its social security institutions. He particularly referenced the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) and the Compensation Fund (CF), which allowed it to be able to distribute some benefits to those affected on an unprecedented scale.

The minister stated, “The payment of COVID Temporary Employer/Employee Relief Scheme (TERS) benefits by the UIF quickly became a target for fraud and corruption. We are grateful to the Office of the Auditor-General and the SIU for their assistance in identifying and investigating fraudulent activity.”
