Former Miss South Africa and current Miss Universe, Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters, celebrated National Heritage Day in New York on Monday, 24 September.
Nel-Peters attended the Nelson Mandela Peace Summit in New York in her role as Miss Universe on Monday.
She posted various photographs of herself at the event, including one in which she proudly holds up the South African flag. “Nelson Mandela Peace Summit hosted at the United Nations. Grateful for the opportunity to represent my country, South Africa,” she wrote of the experience. Other familiar South African celebrity faces in attendance at the summit and statue unveiling were current reigning Miss South Africa Tamaryn Green and television personality Gerry Elsdon.
Earlier on Monday, Nel-Peters sent out a post, wishing all South Africans a happy Heritage Day. She wrote, “My heart in my hand! Happy Heritage Day South Africa”, to caption a photograph of herself.
While in New York, Nel-Peters was commissioned as Miss Universe, to raise awareness at the UN General Assembly on neglected surgical diseases on behalf of the world’s leading cleft charity, Smile Train. Her reign as Miss Universe will come to an end on 17 December 2018, when she hands over the crown to her successor at the 67th Miss Universe pageant happening in Bangkok, Thailand.
