de Lille to host webinar unpacking women’s roles in land matters

Patricia de Lille has announced her upcoming webinar, where she will discuss women in land reform, agriculture and food security, in honour of Women’s Month.

Minister of Public Works and Infrastructure, Patricia de Lille is set to host a webinar on The Role of Women in Land Reform, Agriculture and Food Security, in commemoration of Women’s Month on Thursday, 26 August 2021. She conveyed how women are constrained by poverty, lack of access to land, and the difficulties perpetuated by gender inequality.

The Department of Public Works and Infrastructure (DPWI) is of the opinion that there needs to be a greater level of women participating and benefitting from land reform when it comes to ownership, land tenure and food security. It further stated that this could be achieved by granting women access to land resources as part of reform and land redistribution, and allowing them to become beneficiaries of expropriation.

The aim of the webinar is to showcase what the government has done to empower women in terms of land reform, specifically in agriculture, land ownership and land tenure. Moreover, it is to showcase successful beneficiaries and hear from women farmers who have benefitted from land reform measures. de Lille also stated, “As we celebrate Women’s Month, women empowerment has become a frequent cited goal of land reform, redistribution and now expropriation.”
