DBE vaccination rollout begins

The education sector has kicked off its vaccination rollout, as Angie Motshekga has expressed satisfaction and called on all union leaders to assist in a smooth rollout.

On Wednesday, 23 June 2021, the Department of Basic Education (DBE) launched the vaccination programme for all teachers, support staff, and leaders of the various teachers unions. Minister of Basic Education, Angie Motshekga joined the MEC for Education in Gauteng, Panyaza Lesufi at the Rabasotho Community Centre in Tembisa for the start of the rollout for the department.

Minister Motshekga addressed the media by expressing her elation and hopefulness that the rollout will be successful. The department has committed to a two-week timeline to successfully vaccinate over 500 000 teachers, while ensuring that there is no disruption of schooling.

The minister told the media that by the time the department closes schools on Thursday, 8 July 2021, it will be done with vaccinating the targeted number of staff. Union leaders will also be assisting.
