DBE successfully vaccinates over 48 000 teachers and staff

The Department of Basic Education had a successful first day of its countrywide vaccination campaign, managing to vaccinate over 48 000 teachers and support staff.

The Department of Basic Education (DBE) commenced its long-awaited and urgent vaccination campaign on Wednesday, 23 June 2021. It has since released a media statement on the day that was, reporting that it successfully vaccinated over 48 000 teachers and support staff on the first day, which the department is satisfied with.

The department stated, “The Department of Basic Education is satisfied with the first day of the vaccination programme in the basic education sector. More than 48 000 educators and staff were vaccinated on the first day. That’s according to a preliminary report from the Department of Health.”

The department has, however, mentioned that the figure was not inclusive of the Western Cape and Limpopo, who are set to start their programmes on Thursday, 24 June 2021, and Friday, 25 June 2021. KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) has led the numbers and managed to vaccinate the most teachers and staff. The lowest number recorded was in the Northern Cape. The province has now decided to send mobile teams to some of its smallest towns, so as to kickstart their campaigns. The department also noted that there are fake reports being circulated, claiming that it does not have sufficient doses, which it has rubbished.
