DBE sets record straight on teachers who are not vaccinated

Published on

The DBE has issued a media statement setting the record straight on misleading misinformation suggesting that teachers who had not been vaccinated are at risk of losing their jobs.

The Department of Basic Education (DBE) set the record straight regarding Circular 4 of 2021 on teachers who are not vaccinated. In a statement on Wednesday, 28 July 2021, the DBE stated that it was concerned by misleading reports and misinformation regarding a circular distributed in schools last week. The department noted that a “no jab, no job” narrative emanated from an article of a Johannesburg-based publication, causing confusion and fear among educators.

The department also noted a seven-page circular which made the rounds on social media, resulting in unnecessary anxiety and panic among teachers who have not been vaccinated. The department pointed out that it had strongly urged education sector personnel to get vaccinated, but had at no stage compelled employees to be vaccinated, with the circular stating that it respected the rights of educators who opted not to get vaccinated.

The DBE clarified that the circular issued to schools was to provide steps to be taken to accommodate teachers who were not able to get vaccinated for specific reasons. The department has urged sector personnel to apply the contents of the circular appropriately to maintain stability under COVID-19 conditions.
