DBE receives additional vaccine doses

Published on

The Department of Basic Education is calling for more teachers and supporting staff to get vaccinated, as the department has reportedly received an additional 289 000 doses to cover remaining staff.

On Monday, 5 July 2021, the Department of Basic Education (DBE) issued a statement urging all teachers and staff who have not yet received their COVID-19 jabs to go get vaccinated. The department is calling for education staff to get their Johnson & Johnson (J&J) vaccines. Although schools are currently closed, the vaccination rollout for the sector is still continuing.

The department confirmed that more than 333 000 education staff have been vaccinated since the start of the campaign on Wednesday, 23 June 2021. Phase 1 of the department’s target was to vaccinate 300 000 teachers and supporting staff within the first 10 days of the campaign. By Thursday, 1 July 2021, nine days later, over 100 percent (300 052) educational staff had been vaccinated across all nine provinces, surpassing the target for the allocated time frame.

The department has since received an additional 289 000 doses of the J&J vaccine. The additional doses will reportedly enable the department to reach its overall target of vaccinating 582 564 educational staff. The department also stated that it will continue to administer the doses to cover the remaining 282 512 staff. All staff have been urged to follow district schedules properly.
