DBE looks to expand reach through news and YouTube channels

The DBE has confirmed its repositioning strategy through the introduction of a television and YouTube channel, as a way to address the learning shortfall in the public education system.

The Department of Basic Education (DBE) took to Twitter on Thursday, 13 May 2021, to announce the creation of its television and YouTube channels. The move is said to be the department’s effort to reposition itself through the introduction of a news channel on OpenView channel 121.

Considering the low-cost of the payment subscription platform, the move is expected to have a wider reach. Moreover, the content shared on the channel will then be made available on the department’s YouTube channel.  Moreover, the matter is believed to be of utmost importance because of the continued rotation of school learning, which has negatively impacted the school calendar and learning activities.

In a subsequent post elaborating on the aim of the reposition, the department noted, “The aim of this undertaking is to increase the viewership of learner support content on the channels by introducing interesting content which will draw viewers, specifically learners.”
